Haitan child starving in 1976

This picture shows a child in Haiti starving. It was taken in 1976, and the same conditions are still found today in Haiti. Living conditions this bad should have been changed long ago, but they haven’t. So much has changed in 30 years: back then, the PC didn’t even exist! Yet somehow, no one has helped to change the problems of this extremely poor country. People only seem to care about themselves, even when children are dying right before their eyes. -EL

Mexicans crossing border

The above picture is of a fence near the Texas-Mexico border. Two people are crossing it, and one is throwing a backpack across. Illegal immigration is a constant issue in the U.S., and everyone has different opinions about what should be done about them. This picture shows how desperate people are to get into the U.S. If the people in the photo are immigrants, that one backpack is probably all he has to start a new life. When we consider this, it makes us think differently about the immigrants. Instead of kicking them out, we should think about how hard they try to make a better life for themselves here in the US. -EL

 bolivia-riot-fire

In this photograph, a Bolivian man escapes from a fire caused by a street riot. In Bolivia, rioting is common, usually caused by the citizens’ anger with the government. For the most part, Bolivia is poverty-stricken, and the governmental system does little to remedy this. If riots and deaths are to end, their cause must end first. If Bolivians are given a chance for true democracy, they will be able to decide for themselves what is right, instead of killing their brothers and sisters in the streets. -ET
